Telular delivers value and intelligence using smart connected devices

Telular delivers value and intelligence using smart connected devices

As a global technology leader, Telular provides solutions for commercial telematics, security, and bulk storage management. The Internet of Things (IoT) enables Telular to give customers actionable information and intelligence based on data collected from their connected devices. This has transformed Telular’s relationship with its customers, allowing the company to move away from pure hardware-oriented discussions, toward delivering increased value through recurring services.

Telular uses Control Center to optimize the behavior and cost structure of devices, resulting in a cost savings of up to 15 percent. Additionally Control Center has enabled Telular to launch complete new services that they hadn’t considered previously, and has been instrumental in supporting Telular’s global expansion.

Telular Corporation develops products and services that take advantage of the Internet of Things (IoT) to provide connectivity services to a variety of industries, including trucking, security and bulk storage management. Telular has been in the business of connecting people and machines through cellular networks for nearly three decades, and rapid advancements in IoT technology in recent years have made it possible for the company to focus more on collecting data and providing intelligence to their customers.

“In the last five years, we’ve really started to aggregate the information coming from smart connected devices so that our customers can get the most value out of their systems,” says Chris Bear, Senior Vice President of Products at Telular.

“The biggest challenge is making sure that with all the data that we have available to us, we’re collecting the right data, so our customers can find value in it every day,” explains Shawn Welsh, VP of Marketing and Business Development at Telular. “With the whole concept of big data, there’s a tendency to show big data in all its glory, but customers need to make their big decisions without distraction, so we try to minimize the amount of data we show and give them just what they need.”

Welsh believes that the IoT has enabled Telular to move away from pure hardware-oriented discussions with the customer, toward delivering real value through recurring services and the power of the information they obtain from customers’ connected devices.

Connected devices are at the heart of Telular’s business within every industry that the company operates:

  • Telular’s SkyBitz business unit provides asset tracking services, collecting sensor data regarding position, speed, cargo status and tire pressure.
  • TankLink delivers highly accurate information on temperature, liquid levels and geolocation for the oil and gas industry.
  • Telguard interactive alarm systems provide solutions to protect homes and businesses across North America.

“One interesting example of the use of IoT is a tire inflation system on tractor trailers in our trucking segment,” explains Welsh. “The truck is equipped with an LED that alerts the driver of low tire pressure, so the driver knows when to call maintenance. By connecting the LED, we move all that data directly to the cloud, so maintenance yards, warranty systems, and all the other pieces of the solution are automatically informed. This removes the burden of reporting incidents from drivers, and improves the entire experience for the customer as well as the vendor.”

Telular has been using Control Center for more than five years in three main areas: back-end systems, technical support and rate plan management.

“The Spotlight feature of Control Center is invaluable for our technical support. It allows us to get to the bottom of problems quickly and easily,” explains Bear. “We use integration APIs with our back-end systems to seamlessly activate and deactivate units. The web services APIs enable us to adapt our rate plan structure to changing conditions to minimize costs.”

Bear credits the Spotlight feature of Control Center with helping the company’s support function gain efficiencies, however, he believes that web services APIs have made the most significant impact on Telular’s business and the bottom line by enabling the company to adjust its rate plan structure.

“It helps us optimize the behavior and cost structure of devices,” explains Bear. “The APIs within Control Center are very powerful, and through their use we’ve been able to cut costs with some of our carrier partners by up to 15 percent,” adds Welsh. “I can’t stress enough how much the power of Jasper APIs has helped us supercharge our business.”

Welsh recalls the time prior to IoT and Jasper when Telular worked with smaller carriers, connecting devices using rudimentary tools. “A lot of it was simply picking up the phone and calling people for assistance. With Control Center, we’re able to isolate problems and get right to the heart of anything we’re seeing. Even in the development process it helps us greatly. I really think Spotlight is the shining example of the difference between a pre- and post-Control Center world for us.”

The partnership with Jasper has also been instrumental as Telular moves to new markets, especially working with different carriers in North America and Europe, with their diverse interfaces and network structures.

“Using Jasper Control Center has really allowed us to seamlessly engage with new partners,” notes Welsh. “The fact that Control Center is presented as the same interface across carriers enables us to be up and running with a new carrier within a week.”

Chris Bear also comments that the process of integrating Control Center into Telular’s operations has been smooth and straightforward. “We had connections up and running within a day,” he says. “All the documentation is excellent; there are examples for our engineers, and it was very, very straightforward.”

“When I think about Control Center, what impresses me most is that we have a diversity of people using it across our entire organization, everyone from customer support to tech support to engineers to executives. And when you have a tool that can be used effectively by so many different roles, that really speaks highly of Jasper and the job they’ve done implementing Control Center,” concludes Bear. “We think of Jasper as the most powerful IoT management platform we’ve ever used.”
